St. Louis, MO to Martha's Vineyard, MA

We trekked to St. Louis after Stu got home from work.  The West St. Louis / Historic Rte 66 campground is our favorite so far!  We arrived at 8:30 pm and our friends met us there!  They had an outdoor movie playing (Big Hero 6!) and we popped popcorn and chatted - so fun!  The kiddos went to sleep early and we set an alarm for 5:30 am - off to Granny's birthday party tomorrow!

We drove to Cincinnati and had a scary sway issue when we got sucked into the draft of a semi.  Yikes!  We finally made it to Cincinnati and checked into the beautiful Winton Woods Campground and went to the Mariemont Inn.  It's a beautiful old hotel in downtown Mariemont -- it reminds me so much of our little neighborhood!  Granny's party was wonderful and it was so fun to catch up with extended family.  Monday we checked out and headed back to the campground.  There's a beautiful lake - we biked to a playground and around the lake and then back to the campsite.  That night we headed back into Cincinnati to eat dinner and swim with the family.

We went from Cincinnati to Salt Fork Lake to camp with our friends who also have a kiddo adopted from Thailand.  We had burgers and hot dogs, the kids rode bikes, caught fireflies, and shot glow stick rockets.  We got up and spent the day on our friend's boat.  The kids LOVED tubing behind the boat.  We came in early because it was hot outside -- and started packing.  We got on the road at 4:30 pm and headed for the cape.  We drove until 9:30 pm and stopped at a travel plaza for a few hours.  We got back on the road at 3:30 am.  We went through 8 states that day -- OH, PA, WV, NJ, NY, CN, RI, and MA!  The KOA was fabulous.  We had a deluxe patio site with a swing right next to the bath house.  We made hobo packs for dinner and s'mores.  Earlier in the day we went on a jump pillow, rode the train, swam in the pool, ate ice cream, and the kids played on the playground for hours.  Quite a full day!

We started packing at 9:30 am and got on the road at 11:30 am.  The ferry ride was incredible -- we booked it last February!  We drove the Airstream on - along with dump trucks, semi trucks, and more!  We arrived in Oak Bluffs -- it is gorgeous!  We drove to the campground and got all settled.  We headed to the house our extended family rented.  The kids played and swam and we ate lobster.  What an exciting day!  We walked to Mad Martha's for ice cream -- and that's a wrap!

After our campsite breakfast, we went to the house and got our bikes.  We rode quite a distance - to the Right Fork Diner - it's a restaurant off a grassy field where vintage bi-planes take off and land.  It was magical!  We then rode to the beach and the kids played in the surf and built sand castles.  We rode back to the house and swam - and even passed an Alpaca Farm on the way back and saw some llamas.  Dinner was walking tacos and s'mores at the BLT.  The cousins played in the sandy campsite and had a blast.

Today we drove to Menemsha and had lobster rolls on the water.  We contemplated taking the bike ferry to Aquinna but we read that the trails to Gay Head Cliff are steep and rocky, so we bailed on that.  Stu bought me a beautiful lobster bouy birdhouse and we got a cute MV frisbee.  Our oldest is such an athlete and picked it up right away!  Afterwards we headed to Oak Bluffs to ride the Flying Horses Carousel!  If you get the brass ring at the end, you get a free ride!  I got it the first time and another relative got it the second time.  Believe it or not, we could have won a third time but let the lady behind us have a turn.  Next it was burgers at the house and a surprise ice cream birthday cake for me!

Today was my birthday!  We went to the Fire Engine Museum in Edgartown and walked the kids to the playground.  After that we walked into the downtown area for Skinny Fat Sandwiches, next to Mad Martha's.  I had the chance to take a quick shopping trip and saw the Chappy Ferry and the Edgartown Lighthouse.  We swam all afternoon and at 4:30 we headed to the Shark Cantina for dinner and margaritas.  Afterwards we headed to the beach to enjoy the beach and collect seashells and then on to Oak Bluffs for the famous Back Door Donuts - hot off the fryer at 7 pm.  The honey dipped was our favorite and the apple fritter and cinnamon rolls were as big as my head!  On the way back to the campsite, we went to the East Chop Lighthouse for a photo op -- perfect ending!

We woke up to a drizzly morning!  After packing some things up, we decided to go on a driving tour of the island.  We started at Gay Head Cliffs - a gorgeous spot with cliffs and a lighthouse.  We ate clam chowder in the pouring rain and "hiked" to the viewing spot.  Next we mapped Cape Poge - it said and hour and a half and we had some time to burn - so we ventured out!  Part of that time estimate included the Chappy Ferry.  We drove onto a ferry that held three cars -- and in two minutes, we were across to the island!  The lighthouse was another 30 minutes and we came to a dirt road.  At the end was a bridge and a sign warning us to air down our tires to 15 psi.  Also, a permit was required.  We ended up trying to see the lighthouse from a lookout point down a different dirt road.  It was a grand adventure all around.  We took the ferry back to Edgartown from Chappaquidick Island.  We stopped in and said goodbye to our family and went back to the BLT to pack up.   We talked to another Airstream owner (there were 3 Airstreams at the campground!) and hitched up!  We were on the 6:15 pm ferry back to Woods Hole.  We met a nice couple from Connecticut -- she grew up in Kansas City!  Our chat with them made the ferry ride go by quickly!  Our campsite was about 20 minutes from the ferry stop.  Sippewissett Campgrounds and Cabins -- it wasn't glamorous but was very utilitiarian and the people were friendly.  Stu woke up at 2 am and we did the 26 hour trip home in one fell swoop.  And somehow we went a route that had only $0.75 in tolls instead of over $100 through New York!  What a trip!
